About the Role

The Case Worker will provide individualized, bilingual (Spanish/English), primarily remote support to migrant workers, assisting them in accessing workplace rights, benefits, and justice. This includes help with applications, forms, interpretation, and referrals, as well as maintaining up-to-date, accurate, and confidential case notes and program records. The role also involves coordinating resources for workers in abusive situations, maintaining regular client communication, and contributing to program development and outreach as time allows.

Responsibilities

Client Support and Case Management

  • Assist migrant workers—also known as Temporary Foreign Workers—in accessing workplace-related rights and benefits by providing support with form completion, interpretation, translation and accompaniment related to Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) claims, labour complaints, Employment Insurance (EI), pensions, and other relevant programs.

  • Assist migrant workers in applying for Vulnerable Worker Open Work Permits (VWOWPs) and coordinate resources to support their safe transition out of abusive or exploitative workplace situations, including identifying and coordinating short-term housing and other immediate needs.

  • Assess needs, make appropriate referrals, and collaborate with service providers on specific cases when applicable.

  • Assist low-income migrant workers in finding low-cost or pro-bono legal representation when pursuing legal action, including help with navigation, translation, and interpretation services as needed.

  • Maintain regular communication with workers through email, WhatsApp, and occasional in-person visits as needed.

  • Provide culturally sensitive and trauma-informed support tailored to the unique needs and circumstances of migrant workers.

  • Maintain up-to-date, accurate, and confidential case notes and program records.

Program Development and Volunteer Coordination

  • Provide ongoing supervision, coordination, and support to volunteers to ensure meaningful and effective engagement in service delivery.

  • Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and update the Support Guide to ensure consistent and effective service delivery, as time permits.

Outreach and Community Engagement

  • Participate in outreach activities to build trust with migrant workers and share legal rights information, in collaboration with other staff, as time and resources allow.

  • Represent the organization at relevant community functions to raise awareness and encourage community engagement when opportunities arise and hours permit.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in social work, community development, law, or a related field is preferred but not required; equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in community outreach, social services, case work, or a related field, ideally with migrant or marginalized populations is preferred.

  • Strong knowledge of the Canadian immigration system, including the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, and familiarity with Workers’ Compensation and Nova Scotia Labour Standards.

  • Experience providing support to marginalized communities—including assistance with applications and client accompaniment—using trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, and culturally responsive approaches.

  • Experience coordinating and supervising volunteers.

  • Strong organizational and project management skills.

  • Experience developing or maintaining manuals, standard operating procedures (SOPs), or training materials is an asset.

  • Fluency in both Spanish and English (oral and written) is required. In exceptional cases, we may consider applicants who do not meet this language requirement but bring significant relevant experience.

  • Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable, insured vehicle.

Skills and Competencies

  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain complex information in a way that’s easy to understand.

  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking abilities to navigate complex systems and processes.

  • Cultural competency, empathy, patience, and professionalism in responding to the needs of migrant workers and other vulnerable populations.

  • Deep understanding of confidentiality, privacy, and safety principles, with a demonstrated commitment to ethical handling of sensitive client information.

  • Comfortable working independently and remotely, with a proactive approach and ability to take initiative.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with staff, volunteers, and external partners.

  • Strong attention to detail, especially in documentation and data accuracy.

  • Skilled at managing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines efficiently.

  • Strong familiarity with relevant community, legal, and government services to support effective referrals.

  • Demonstrated alignment with organizational values, including equity, anti-oppression, migrant justice, mutual aid, solidarity, anti-racism, gender justice, and coalition-building.

  • Proficient in using Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Drive, etc.).

What We Offer

  • Paid time off and support for professional development.

  • Orientation and role-specific training.

  • A collaborative, equity-driven work environment.

  • Opportunities to work directly with migrant communities and contribute to systemic change.

Conditions of Employment

  • The Case Worker will report to the CMWR NS Executive Director.

  • The Case Worker and Executive Director will jointly determine the work schedule. The Case Worker must be available some evenings and/or weekends in order to accommodate workers’ schedules.

  • The role will mostly be remote, with some in-person activities throughout the province.

  • The Case Worker may be asked to perform additional duties as required and as their hours permit.
