We're Hiring: Legal Information and Community Engagement Coordinator (Spanish-Speaking)

The Centre for Migrant Worker Rights Nova Scotia (CMWR NS) is a community-based organization which engages in support services, outreach, community-building and rights-based education to advance migrant worker rights, equality and well-being in Nova Scotia. We are currently seeking a Spanish-Speaking Legal Information and Community Engagement Coordinator.

Schedule: 35 hours/week. Some evening and weekend work is required

Compensation: $28.30 /hour + 4% vacation pay

Location: Remote, with some in-person activities in various parts of Nova Scotia. Preference will be given to applicants residing in Halifax. Only applicants currently residing in Nova Scotia will be considered for this position.


About the Role

The Legal Information and Community Engagement Coordinator provides legal information and navigation to migrant workers through a bilingual (Spanish-English) helpline. They lead outreach and education efforts, coordinate and support volunteers, manage and improve helpline operations, and assist with case follow-ups as needed. 

Responsibilities

Helpline Coordination

  • Provide legal information, navigation, and conduct intake process for migrant workers across Nova Scotia through our bilingual (Spanish-English) helpline.

  • Ensure accurate documentation of calls, referrals, and follow-ups.

  • Support contact management and maintain ongoing communication with migrant workers, including sharing information about their rights and available resources.

  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive Helpline Manual and Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to support consistent and effective helpline operations.

  • Analyze helpline data and prepare reports that demonstrate service impact for both internal use and external communications.

  • Lead an assessment of the current intake process to identify opportunities for improving efficiency, accessibility, and responsiveness to migrant worker needs.

Volunteer Coordination

  • Coordinate the recruitment, onboarding, training, and recognition of volunteers supporting service delivery and outreach activities.

  • Recruit and engage volunteer lawyers who can offer legal expertise and support to the organization.

Education and Outreach

  • Lead 6 outreach activities in various parts of the province geared toward migrant workers to build trust, reduce isolation, and share legal information on rights and entitlements.

  • Organize 4 legal information sessions and educational presentations for migrant workers and lawyers, in collaboration with legal organizations.

Support Services

  • Provide support with individual case follow-up when needed, i.e., during periods of high case load, help migrant workers with forms, interpretation, translation, and system navigation. Specific examples may include support with vulnerable worker open work permits, workers’ compensation, labour complaints, and benefits applications.

Experience and Qualifications

  • An undergraduate degree in social sciences, law, community development, or a related field is required. A Master’s degree is considered an asset but not required. Equivalent combinations of education and relevant experience will be considered.

  • Minimum 3 years experience working in community outreach, legal support, or non-profit program coordination is preferred.

  • Experience working directly with migrant communities, racialized populations, and/or other equity-deserving groups using trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, and culturally responsive frameworks.

  • Knowledge of the Canadian immigration system, including the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, as well as familiarity with Workers Compensation and Nova Scotia Labour Standards. 

  • Experience providing legal information or navigation support in a community or non-profit setting.

  • Experience coordinating or delivering intake processes or frontline services, especially via phone or helpline.

  • Experience documenting casework and managing service data, as well as analyzing service statistics to prepare reports.

  • Experience coordinating volunteers, including recruitment, training, and recognition. 

  • Strong organizational and project management skills.

  • Experience developing or maintaining manuals, standard operating procedures (SOPs), or training materials is an asset.

  • Experience improving service delivery or intake processes is an asset.

  • Bilingualism in Spanish/English. 

  • Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable, insured vehicle.

  • Excellent communication skills — verbal, written, and interpersonal — with the ability to explain legal information clearly to diverse audiences.

  • Cultural competency, empathy, patience, and professionalism in responding to the needs and experiences of migrant workers and other vulnerable populations.

  • Strong understanding of confidentiality, privacy, and safety principles, with a demonstrated ability to uphold ethical standards when handling sensitive client information.

  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking abilities to support navigation of complex systems.

  • Comfortable working independently and remotely, with a proactive approach and ability to take initiative.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and external partners.  

  • Proficiency with data tracking and CRM tools; familiarity with NationBuilder is an asset.

  • Strong attention to detail, especially in documentation and data accuracy.

  • Ability to coordinate multiple priorities and meet deadlines effectively.

  • Demonstrated alignment with the organization’s values, including equity, anti-oppression, migrant justice, mutual aid, solidarity, anti-racism, gender justice, and coalition-building.

  • Comfortable using Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Drive, etc.).

  • Ability to create clear and useful materials that help guide how work gets done.

  • Ability to look at how tasks or services are carried out and suggest ways to improve  them.

Conditions of Employment

  • The Coordinator will report to the CMWR NS Executive Director. 

  • The Coordinator and Executive Director will jointly determine the work schedule. The Coordinator must be available some evenings and/or weekends in order to accommodate workers’ schedules.

  • The role will mostly be remote, with some in-person activities throughout the province. 

  • The Coordinator may be asked to perform additional duties as required and as their hours permit. 

  • This position includes a probationary period during which performance and suitability for the role will be assessed.

  • Reimbursement for mileage and certain expenses is available with prior approval.
