We’re hiring: English Language Coordinator (Part-Time, Temporary)
The Centre for Migrant Worker Rights Nova Scotia (CMWR NS) is a community-based organization which engages in support services, outreach, community-building and rights-based education to advance migrant worker rights, equality and well-being in Nova Scotia. We are currently seeking a part-time English Language Coordinator to develop, launch and oversee our English for Migrant Workers (EMW) Pilot Program in the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM).

Schedule:
20-25 hours/week (May - June) for curriculum development and promotions
10-12 hours/week (July - December) for program delivery and wrap-up
Some evening and weekend work is required.
Compensation: $26.5-$30 commensurate with experience + 4% vacation pay
Location: Remote, with some in-person activities in the Halifax Regional Municipality
About the Role & Program:
The English Language Coordinator will develop, launch and oversee the English for Migrant Workers (EMW) Pilot Program, which provides English-as-an-Additional-Language (EAL) instruction tailored to migrant workers (also known as Temporary Foreign Workers) in the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM). The Program aims to strengthen migrant workers’ connections to the community, reduce isolation, build confidence in navigating work and daily life in Canada, and enhance their understanding of workplace safety and labour rights through English language instruction.
The Coordinator will promote the EMW Pilot Program to migrant workers, develop curriculum and educational resources, coordinate program delivery and instructor support, organize field trips, and lead monitoring and evaluation efforts to improve the program. Language instruction will be primarily remote through weekly classes.
Key Responsibilities:
Outreach & Promotion: Promote EAL courses to migrant workers and coordinate promotional material creation with a graphic designer.
Curriculum & Educational Resource Development: Develop curriculum for three English as an additional language (EAL) levels, including lesson plans. Develop 10 short educational videos in collaboration with a video editor.
Program Coordination & Instructor Support: Oversee delivery of the program, including managing class registration, coordinating conversation groups, recruiting and supervising EAL instructors, assisting with classes, evaluating learners’ progress, and stepping in to teach classes, if needed.
Field Trip Planning: Organize field trips to enhance language learning and introduce local landmarks.
Monitoring & Evaluation: Design and administer surveys to evaluate program success and incorporate feedback to improve the program.
Wrap-Up Activities: Compiling project information (i.e. contacts) and producing a written report on project results.
Experience and Qualifications:
Relevant training (ie. TESL Certification)
Active TESL NS membership or ongoing professional development
Experience teaching EAL to adults, particularly immigrant or migrant communities
Training and/or experience in adult education
Experience in program coordination (including promotions and evaluation) and curriculum development for various learner levels
Proficiency in Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Drive, etc.)
Valid Nova Scotia driver’s license and access to a vehicle for work-related travel
Experience in creation and development of educational materials such as videos
Skills & Competencies:
Volunteer coordination skills
Cross-cultural communication skills
Strong organizational, problem-solving, and multitasking skills
Excellent written and verbal communication
Language skills in Spanish or other languages spoken by migrant workers (an asset)
Familiarity with Canada’s Temporary Foreign Worker Program (an asset)
Conditions of Employment:
The Coordinator will report to CMWR NS Executive Director.
The Coordinator and Executive Director will jointly determine the work schedule. Once courses begin, the Coordinator must be available some evenings and/or weekends in order to accommodate the learners’ schedules.
The role will entail a combination of remote work as well as in-person coordination in the HRM.
The Coordinator may be asked to perform additional duties as required and as their hours permit.
Reimbursement for mileage and certain expenses is available with prior approval.
